Stefan Balan
Stefan Balan is a Romanian-born, award-winning, American poet and oncologist living in the Greater Boston area.
In Romania, The Museum of Literature published his book of poetry, The Night, and his co-authored volume of film criticism, Lars von Trier: Movies, Women, Ghosts, received the National Film Critics' award.
In the US, his work has appeared in The Baltimore Review, West Branch, Pensive, Frog Pond, The McNeese Review, and The Red Moon Anthology, among others. Internationally, his poetry has been published in the UK, Sweden, Portugal, India, Australia, and South Africa.
He is a Pushcart Prize nominee and a finalist of the 2025 MĀNOA journal poetry contest and the New Millenium Writing cotest. In 2024 he received the 3rd Wednesday's first prize for poetry and an honorable mention from Passager Journal.
Stefan Balan works as an oncologist in Massachusetts. He is the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s Lane Adams Quality of Life award and the Champions and Visionaries of Healthcare award. He was nominated one of the top doctors in New York, New Jersey, and, most recently (2025), Boston.
